THUNDERSTREAK SNATCHES DOUBLE VICTORY AT ROUGH POOLE RACES

Historic 1963 Bertram 31 pounded home to hard-fought class wins at "bumpy" opening offshore powerboat race calendar. Thunderstreak took first places in the Class 4 Historic/Offshore on both days at the UKOPRA-organised race weekend in Poole Bay. Not only was the Isle of Wight restored and rigged H400, at 58 years, the oldest boat in the 20-30 boat fleet by several decades and more, but the crew’s average age was comfortably north of 71. One up for the oldies!

NEW LAKE CHARLES LAUNCH KEEPS PACE WITH LNG BOOM

In front of the Lake Charles pilot station, the 70-foot Cameron Pilot II went from zero to 28 knots in a matter of seconds, and did it smoothly. “I’ve been a pilot for 27 years and it’s the best pilot boat I’ve ever been on,” said Capt. Brett Palmer, president of Lake Charles Pilots Inc. “It’s solid and rides really flat, and cuts the waves with no pounding in 5-foot seas. It has incredible visibility and is a very functional, purposebuilt pilot boat.”

Without fanfare, the pilot boats produced by a design/build venture begun in the late 1970s between two venerable Massachusetts firms, C. Raymond Hunt Associates and Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, now dominate the U.S. fleet. THE SECURITY ESCORT VESSEL

The Gladding-Hearn and Hunt Design team demonstrated the 64 SEV in New York Harbor. The demonstration began with the boat crabbing off the dock and turning 180-degrees in the close confines of Liberty Marina. From there it headed into the Upper Bay, and the southern reaches of the North River where various aspects of its maneuverability were displayed.
