Preliminary designs are a sometimes-forgotten aspect of yacht design. Usually, they are the first step in the dialogue between owner and designer, but sometimes we do preliminaries as explorations of our own new ideas. This 140-footer was some of each. The owner had a program of requirements, and Hunt was free to choose size, configuration and styling. One of the main requirements was the ability to launch and recover tenders with ease, so the boat deck was placed at main deck level, contrary to the usual practice. This configuration is well with our belief that the hull should be larger than the minimum required by the interior arrangement. Our other challenge was to create a look which, like all Hunt designs, combines elements of traditional styling into a clean, well-proportioned whole. The dark hull of the 140 emphasizes the sheerline, the deckhouse windows are regular and uncontrived, and the bridge wings are simple but elegant shapes. Though the boat has not been built, she would be, like all her Hunt cousins, handsome, able and fast.
