With increased shipping and yacht traffic, Bermuda had a need for a faster and more capable rescue boat. St. David was designed by Hunt Associates and built in aluminum to Lloyds Register Rules by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding for the Bermuda Department of Marine and Port Services to replace a 20-year old steel hulled boat also built by Gladding-Hearn.

Bermuda has no coast guard, therefore, St. David serves a dual role as Bermuda's primary Pilot boat and as its offshore Search and Rescue boat. Normal duties involve placing pilots aboard ships as they enter Bermuda's harbors at Hamilton and St. George's. SAR calls occur frequently from disabled yachts and for medical emergencies aboard cruise ships when Bermuda is the nearest port.

Range is 300 nm at 25 kts. Top speed is 30 knots at half load. St. David traveled the 600 nm from Massachusetts to Bermuda on its 1000 USG fuel capacity. She is equipped with a rescue platform aft and a 14ft. inflatable that can be launched to assist in rescues. The after deck is designed to receive a helicopter lift basket.

The jet guard structure incorporates a dive/rescue platform, and a separate control station is located on the afterdeck, for use in rescue operations. A remote operated crane is mounted on the house roof, where it is available to assist in rescue operations, or to launch a small boat. The deckhouse is configured as an emergency treatment station, incorporating space for a Stokes litter, and equipped with life-support systems and medical supplies. The focsle contains a basic galley and dinette, four berths, and a head.
